What is a Birth Doula?
Women have complex needs during childbirth and the weeks that follow. In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. They need individualized care based on their circumstances and preferences. DONA International doulas are educated and experienced in childbirth and the postpartum period. We are prepared to provide physical (non-medical), emotional and informational support to women and their partners during labor and birth, as well as to families in the weeks following childbirth. We offer a loving touch, positioning and comfort measures that make childbearing women and families feel nurtured and cared for.
Numerous clinical studies have found that having a doula present during childbirth · tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications · reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience · reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans · reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals
Research shows parents who receive support can: · Feel more secure and cared for · Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics · Have greater success with breastfeeding · Have greater self-confidence · Have less postpartum depression · Have lower incidence of abuse (Dona International)
Benefits of Continuous Support During Labor
A recent study of 21 randomized control trials of over 15,000 women concluded that, "Continuous support during labor has clinically meaningful benefits for women and infants and no known harm. All women should have support throughout labor and birth."
Women who have continuous support during labor report having shorter labors and are more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births. Continuous support also:
reduces the likelihood of a c-section by 25%
reduces the use of pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) by 31%
reduces the likelihood of using pain medication by 9%
reduces the likelihood of rating their childbirth experience negatively by 34%
Increases breastfeeding success
Increases VBAC success rates
How Can I Help?
Doulas do not take the place of a woman's partner during birth. Doulas have specialized education and training that allow them to help support both the birthing mom and her partner on one of the most important days of their lives. We do not make medical decisions for women during labor but we do help provide resources and information so that they can make informed decisions that are best for themselves and their families.
I believe that my personal experiences giving birth, coupled with my education, allow me to help women in a variety of situations. I have been immersed in my local birth communities for the past 9 years and I have kept up to date with evidence based care during that time. I am trained and certified as a doula through DONA International, one of the leading doula certification organizations in the world.
I specialize in VBAC, teen pregnancy, surrogacy, and natural birth in the hospital but my primary goal is to help women have empowering and positive birth experiences no matter what their choices or circumstances are.
